Hello visitors!
Welcome to my blog - my first entry into the new website created to amplify women's empowerment through short narrative fiction film - by Suzanne Moreau Films.
I came across this article in my daily browse - it's gelled my personal mission to see that, despite over a century of feminist activism, we, on the female end of the gender spectrum, are still behind the male end and falling further behind.
Gender equity, gender parity, and now gender diversity are all competing for a slice of the pie. I don't personally believe in the 'finite resources' theory, though. I believe that if all gender identities open up and make room, there will be plenty of air-time for all.
But, when it comes to funding, there is the rub. It is a Catch-22 when funding bodies must make tough decisions on which projects to fund. It comes down to elevating those underrepresented groups to a higher level so that they can eventually achieve parity with the mainstream filmmakers - aka white, heterosexual, cis-males.
Being female-identifying alone is no longer enough when diversity aligns with sexual orientation, ability, gender identity, race, colour, and other aspects of identity. And from what this article says, it looks like there will be a need to be even more proactive - until we as humans - can get away from the finite resources mentality and be open to new concepts of resourcefulness.
Just like women have always been - resourceful.
